TMS AND OTHER CONDITIONS

ONLY 1 IN 5 INDIVIDUALS SUFFERING FROM PTSD EXPERIENCE FULL RECOVERY WITH STANDARD TREATMENT SUCH AS MEDICATION

RESEARCH SHOWS THAT TMS IN PTSD HAS SHOWN IMRPOVEMENTS IN QUALITY OF LIFE

PTSD AND TMS

PTSD is a group of stress reactions that can develop in people who have experienced a traumatic event and statistics show that nearly 8% of people suffer with PTSD over their lifetime. Only 1 in 5 individuals suffering from PTSD get complete relief from symptoms with standard treatments including medication and psychological input.

Research has shown that TMS is effective in reducing PTSD symptoms for patients who are treatment-resistant. PTSD is linked to overactivation of the brain and their altered connectivity with the front part of the brain. TMS restores functions and connectivity of these neurons resulting in improvement of PTSD symptoms.

It is shown that TMS achieves greater symptom control and results in a greater likelihood of returning to work and improving quality of life.

ANXIETY AND TMS

Anxiety disorders are the most common psychiatric disorders and often associated with significant distress and impacts on everyday life. Anxiety disorders have been researched for nearly a century and the results of current treatment modalities including psychological and medication-based treatments have been modest.

There are still a significant number of patients who continue to experience anxiety  disabling symptoms and TMS has been shown to be effective in these individuals who experience anxiety. Research has shown a substantial improvement in anxiety with TMS. We use different types of TMS protocols to treat anxiety disorders.

AUDITORY HALLUCINATIONS CAN BE HIGHLY DISTRESSING AND IMPACT QUALITY OF LIFE

ANTI-PSYCHOTIC MEDICATION ARE ASSOCIATED WITH TROUBLESOME SIDE-EFFECTS INCLUDING WEIGHT GAIN

AUDITORY HALLUCINATIONS AND TMS

Auditory hallucinations is commonly experienced in schizophrenia and many psychiatric disorders. Auditory hallucinations can be highly distressing to individuals and can significantly impact quality of life.

Despite trial of several medications, many patients continue to experience auditory hallucinations. Anti-psychotic medications are also associated with troublesome side-effects. TMS provides a drug-free alternative to treating auditory hallucinations. Using inhibitory TMS treatment has shown to improve auditory hallucinations significantly without any long-term side effects and it is very well tolerated.

OCD AND TMS

In 2018, TMS was given approval for use to treat OCD by the Food and Drugs Administrator (FDA). There is a strong evidence base for TMS treatment in OCD second to depression. Research shows that compared to depression and anxiety disorders, OCD responds more poorly to medication and psychological treatments.

Alternative treatments to the above have included surgical techniques such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) to treat OCD, however, these techniques are only available in 1 to 2 specialist centres in Australia and can be quite invasive with side-effects.

TMS is a great alternative to DBS and in clinical trials has been shown to be equally, if not more, effective.

Double Cone Coil (DCC) is now available at TMS Gold Coast.  DCC coil allows magnetic pulses to reach deeper in brain than a standard coil. This improves the effective of TMS for OCD.
